Understanding Tox vs Filler: Expert Insights from Bethany Brown
Botox vs. Fillers: Navigating the World of Cosmetic Enhancements
Professionals often use industry jargon that can be confusing to others. This happened to me recently when talking to my website developer. As a nurse, I consider myself tech-savvy, but there was a term he used that I didn't understand. So, I asked for clarification. It reminded me of a similar situation a few days ago when someone asked me about the difference between Botox and filler. It surprised me because I assumed everyone knew the distinction. To help clarify, here's a brief summary of the difference between these two popular treatments.
When it comes to cosmetic treatments, understanding the difference between Botox ('tox') and fillers can be perplexing. At The Aesthetics Lounge and Spa Tampa, we aim to shed light on these sought-after procedures, providing clarity and guidance for new and returning clients or those who just want a little more information before jumping into the world of aesthetics. Delve into this informative discussion to demystify the world of aesthetic enhancements. Discover the difference between Botox and fillers today! Let’s go!
Understanding Tox
Tox, commonly referred to as Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, and Juveau, is a neurotoxin utilized to minimize muscle contractions, resulting in long-lasting, smoother skin. This treatment obstructs the release of acetylcholine, a crucial element in muscle contractions. At our med spa, we have observed remarkable outcomes with Xeomin, particularly for those seeking a lighter sensation. This is one of the reasons that I personally love Xeomin (Nu-Tox) and the fact that it has no added fillers. The result? It doesn’t feel heavy- because this girl does use a lot of units on her forehead; some of my clients love Dysport, as it seems to kick in faster for them. The average lifespan of these treatments is approximately 3-4 months. Regarding costs, we base our prices on the number of units or treatment area.
"For example, I charge $195 per body area for Xeomin; this ends up about $9.95/unit. Every patient is different and anatomy is everything! I would never over treat a patient for the sake of just getting units in, but I AM skeptical if a patient tells me another provider treated their whole face with ten units!"
Risks and Downtime
Risks include bruising, local irritation, allergic reactions, and infection. Headaches are common within the first 24 hours. Downtime is minimal; remaining upright for 4 hours post injection and avoiding intense exercise for 24 hours is a general guideline. This helps to prevent the risk of product migration into a neighboring muscle we did not inject.
The Role of Fillers
Now let's get into fillers! Fillers play a crucial role in adding volume and contouring to achieve facial symmetry. Over the years, there have been a significant evolution, from bovine collagen in the 1970s to modern hyaluronic acid-based fillers. We usually talk about filler in terms of syringes. One syringe is one milliliter or one CC. Just to put that in perspective, a ketchup packet has 8 milliliters of ketchup. Filler is used to replace volume that is lost naturally during the aging process, and it can also be used to rebalance and bring symmetry to someone’s profile.
Some of the most popular injection sites are filler for cheeks, chin, lips, temples, and jawline. Imagine the look on someone’s face who has always hated their nose, we can work to reshape it with instant results. If someone has an overbite and a recessed chin, his/her profile can significantly change with more volume added to the chin.
Not loving it? If for any reason, someone is unhappy with their results, we can dissolve the hyaluronic acid based fillers. The product can last 6-24 months, depending on the location and product. Remember, this is a range. Every client’s metabolism and goals are different. Many times someone may come in for more lip filler because they are trying to achieve a certain shape, but the filler previously injected is not worn off. I have clients and colleagues that have not had (or needed) filler redone in over two years, and they are still completely satisfied with the results. Filler can pull water into itself and stimulate collagen, so results tend to get better with time.
Also of note, many of these fillers have lidocaine or are mixed with lidocaine which helps the client feel more comfortable during the procedure. One syringe of filler can run about $500 or more, depending on what product you are using, which provider you are seeing or if multiple syringes may be needed, depending on the goal and budget.
We specialize in popular filler injection areas like cheeks, chin, lips, temples, and jawline. Additionally, we offer biostimulators such as Radiesse and Sculptra, which not only provide volume, but also stimulate collagen production for a more natural aging process.
Side Note: Radiesse and Sculptra are two of my favorite products. Definitely check them out!
Comparing Risks and Downtime
Risks include bruising, local irritation, allergic reactions, vascular occlusion, and infection. Many providers, including us, use microcannulas to make these procedures even safer. These are tiny straws that we feed carefully through a starter hole. The tip is softer and allows us to place filler into an area without having to directly pierce tissue with a needle. Downtime may be a few days depending on bruising, tenderness, and total body area injected. I always advise avoiding a strenuous workout for two days and having Tylenol on hand for pain relief, if needed.
Both neuromodulators and fillers are great modalities for gracefully aging and both can be used to achieve natural results.
As you can see, both treatments carry certain risks, including bruising, irritation, or allergic reactions. However, at The Aesthetics Lounge and Spa Tampa, we utilize microcannulas, a safe and precise technique for filler injections, to minimize downtime.
